Veteran Mathias Kanana Hishoono buried at Eenhana Memorial Shrine

Veteran of the liberation struggle Mathias Kanana Hishoono, who died at the age of 89, was buried at Eenhana Memorial Shrine, joining fellow departed veterans who made sacrifices for the independence of Namibia.

Mourners gathered in large numbers at the Shrine to bid a final farewell to Hishoono, who died on 14 January.

Hishoono was accorded a state funeral by President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah in recognition of his contribution to Namibia’s liberation struggle.

Chief mourner President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah said the shrine is a testimony to the veterans’ bravery and unwavering commitment and now embraces another hero whose legacy will forever inspire generations to come.

She said Hishoono, a founding member of Swapo, devoted his life to serving the Namibian people during the difficult times of the liberation struggle and after independence.

“Comrade Kanana’s legacy should be a powerful motivation for all of us who remember his firm courage in the face of oppression, his selfless dedication for his people and his profound belief in a free and equitable Namibia. Let us celebrate his extraordinary life and recommit ourselves to uphold the ideals for which he fought so bravely.”

The Chairperson of the Sam Nujoma Foundation, Nahas Angula, said Namibia has lost a man whose steadfast commitment greatly advanced Namibia’s pursuit of freedom.

In a message delivered on his behalf, Angula said beyond being a revolutionary leader, Hishoono exemplified bravery and was a true unifier recognised for his fairness and unwavering principles.

“Hishoono will be fondly remembered as an exemplary leader committed to inclusivity while steadfastly upholding Swapo party values since his activism began in the 60s. His leadership approach welcomed diverse perspectives without undermining constitutional principles, all while honourably leading Onambutu village as headman amid these significant national duties.”

President of Independent Patriots for Change, Panduleni Itula, in a message delivered on his behalf, described Hishoono as a stalwart of Namibia’s liberation struggle, a committed patriot and a fearless servant of the people of Namibia.

Dr Itula says Hishoono’s life is one of sacrifices, courage, and unwavering devotion to the ideal of freedom, solidarity, and justice.

“As Tatekulu Hishoono departed, as we reflect on his life of courage, let’s be reminded that the struggle for economic emancipation is not just fought with vigour and great determination, but in unity it can be done by a group of citizens. No, it is us Namibians that must march together to achieve economic independence.”

Former President Hifikepunye Pohamba also paid his respects to the departed veteran in a message delivered on his behalf.

“Our nation has lost a symbol of integrity, wisdom and unwavering patriotism. Comrade Kanana’s legacy lives on in the hearts of every Namibian who believes in freedom, justice and unity.”
