GOVERNMENT ALLOCATES N$350 MILLION TO BOOST CONSERVATION AND PROTECTED AREAS

Over N$350 million has been allocated to state-protected areas, which focuses on enhancing conservation, protection and the sustainable use of wildlife species and their natural habitat.

This includes national parks and other conservation areas.

The Minister of Environment, Forestry and Tourism, Indileni Daniel motivated the budget of the ministry with an allocation of over N$736.8 million in the National Assembly.

“Namibia’s protected areas cover about 17% of the country’s land surface, which comprises 20 national parks. In 2025, they generated N$183 million in revenues.”

Daniel said the implementation of a National Tourism Special Development Master Plan will begin in the current financial year 2026-2027.

“To strengthen governance further, the ministry has commenced reviewing the National Tourism Policy and developing a tourism bill along with the National Gaming Policy and Regulations. Program 4, National Climate Change and Adaptation: Hon. Deputy Chairperson, Hon. Members, the National Climate Change and Adaptation Programme has been allocated 25,635,000. The purpose of this programme is to develop and implement Namibia’s adaptation plan by scaling up initiatives across key sectors, such as agriculture, water, fishery, infrastructure, health and ecosystems.”

The Bush Encroachment Management Programme is allocated N$155.4 million.

“This programme focuses on converting bush biomass into valuable products such as charcoal, wood chips, firewood and so on. It also supports community involvement in forestry, which plans to guide three community forests covering 360,000 hectares. The ministry is prioritising the review of the Forestry Act and its regulation to modernise them and address emerging issues.”
