Toxic fish are washing up on the WA coastline | ABC NEWS

Hundreds of dead puffer fish have been spotted by residents on Onslow Beach, WA, more than 1,300km north of Perth.

The area is popular with swimmers, dog walkers and fishers.

The WA Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD) says it is trying to find the cause of the mass puffer fish killing. It is not yet known whether the puffer fish are the only creatures affected.

Dog walkers are being advised to keep their pets on-leash and report further sightings of the fish, which are toxic to animals and can cause death even when ingested in small quantities.

In other parts of the Pilbara, locals have been confronted by swarms of red-bell jellyfish washing up on coastlines, which can clog marine engines.
