Voice of America Partners with One America News Amid Controversy and Restructuring

Voice of America, established in 1942 to counter Nazi propaganda, will now incorporate coverage from the far-right cable network One America News. This announcement was made by Kari Lake, a former Arizona gubernatorial candidate and current senior adviser at the U.S. Agency for Global Media, who has been tasked by the Trump administration with restructuring VOA. Lake stated that OAN will provide newsfeed services at no cost to USAGM networks, including VOA, the Office of Cuba Broadcasting, and Radio Martí.

OAN has faced criticism for disseminating misinformation regarding COVID-19, the 2020 election, and the January 6th insurrection. Lake characterized the partnership as a significant advantage for American taxpayers, emphasizing her commitment to ensuring reliable options for news programming despite lacking editorial control over VOA and OCB content.

This development follows President Trump’s executive order in March aimed at overhauling the USAGM, which led to over 1,000 VOA staff members being placed on leave and halted broadcasting. VOA has been a frequent target for Trump and conservative critics, who allege it exhibits a liberal bias against the administration.

In response to the president’s actions, VOA journalists filed a lawsuit, arguing that he lacked the authority to withdraw Congressional funding. A federal judge initially blocked the dismantling of the broadcaster, but an appeals court later reversed parts of that ruling. As a result, fewer than 20 of the more than 1,300 VOA staff members returned to work this week, according to sources.
