“It is a Sunni Mosque…Iran Is a Shia Nation”: Fox News Coverage on San Diego Terror Attack

A Fox News segment covering the deadly shooting at the Islamic Center of San Diego is facing backlash after a guest commentator appeared to speculate about a possible “Shia footprint” behind the attack, despite authorities investigating the shooting as an anti-Muslim hate crime carried out by two teenagers.

During the live coverage, the commentator referenced the mosque being Sunni while stating that “Iran is a Shia nation” and that such attacks could potentially have “a Shia footprint.” The remarks sparked outrage online, with many saying the massacre was immediately being politicized and blame redirected onto Muslims themselves, even as worshippers were still mourning the deaths of three victims, including security guard Amin Abdullah who was killed protecting those inside.

The two suspects, identified as 17-year-old Cain Clark and 18-year-old Caleb Vazquez, were later found dead from apparent self-inflicted gunshot wounds. Investigators say anti-Muslim writings and racist messages were discovered as part of the investigation.

Critics say the comments reflect a broader pattern of anti-Muslim and sectarian rhetoric that continues to dehumanize Muslims, even in the aftermath of attacks targeting Muslim communities themselves.
